" Many years ago I was fortunate to have met a 92 year old artist named Harriet Middleton. She taught me the concept of "Big World Little World." Her schooling was all encompassing and gave her the gift of this concept, which is no longer taught in most art schools. The Big world is the universe and spirit, and the small world is the painting. As very large shapes overlap each other within the small world of the painting, they also extend, in our imaginations, to the bigger world. Smaller and smaller repeated shapes fill the canvas, and what develops is the feeling of unity. Harriet understood, as I do, that unity not only involves the painting, but also the spirit of universe an universal truths."- Julie Cohn
